Is it normal to have a cold barrel fouling shot to be 3 inches right and 3 inches high?
Sorry if this sounds dumb but my first shot of the day at 100 yards was this far off. Second shot was right on.

That is why I don't clean my hunting rifles after sighting in until after the season is over. Best to check next time out if the cause was clean barrel or cold barrel. If it goes high and right with a cold dirty barrel you should look at your bedding. Just my opinion and worth what you paid for it.

Like iceman said.
Some rifles more than you would like, others, next to nothing.
It seems to be more to do with oil in the bore than fouling , when you fire a fouled bore group from a cold bore every shot you often get your best grouping, and, to original point of aim. Some of mine will stay right on 1st shot if "lockeaze" is left in a clean bore, all are closer with than without it.My "problem" rifles get (labouriously) sighted in with a clean and lube for each shot as I hate rusty holes.
A bedding fault will keep the p.o.i. shifting about. check the barrel channel first.
My rifles are more consistent year round with magmum primers, minimizes the way low shots at 25 below. Best develop loads in summer to avoid nasty pressures from heat.

"...should look at your bedding..." Yep. The first shot is the important one with a hunting rifle. Kind of odd that it's only the first shot though. Mind you, some rifles are just like that.
"...check the barrel channel first..." Seal it if it's a wood stock. Any wood sealer found in any hardware store will do. Make sure the screws are tight too.
Used to drink in a 'rusty hole' when I could still afford to drink in bars. Worked in a few as well. snicker.

Weird things do happen.
I've got a 6.5 swede in a bell & carlson stock that needs an eighth inch clearance both sides of the barrel.....Why?..... cause the side of the stock thats in the sun bends toward the shady side. You can bet a rusty hole I went bananas trying to figure why my tackdriver was only good on cloudy days!.
I am leaning more and more to the opinion that the pursuit of rifle precision is a game well suited to masochists.

edit: more like three sixteenths
