bit of a newbie here but want to buy a new shotgun that has a 3" chamber. Already own two shotguns that accept 2.75" shells. Can I put 2.75" shells into a 3" chamber and still be safe?

Yes. As a matter of fact, precious few people actually fire 3" shells unless they are actually hunting.

A 3" chamber will handle a 2.75" shell nicely. I've shot hundreds and hundreds of 2.75" in my 3" 870.

3" can take 3" and smaller. 2.75" and 2.5".

3.5" can take 3.5" 3" 2.75" and such. As long as the gauge remains the same
