what kind of choke should i use?
what barrel lenght?
can i use a pump all purpose shotgun like a rem870 or moss 500?

i realy like the look and feel of tactical shotguns but i would also like to shoot skeet ! is it possible or am i dreaming?

thanks!

For SKEET not Trap - Improved cylinder is the tightest choke for best results... a short barrel on a pump action works fine..

You certainly can use any shotgun you wish for skeet and trap. Now if you are going to be a "serious" competitive skeet shooter, then NO a Mossy 500 or Rem 870 will NOT do.

I shoot trap regularly with a Mossy 500 20 guage ($277 new) and score 20/25 - 23/25. It is also used a my field gun for hunting. 20/25 is plenty good for me. If I was wanting 25/25 and shooting skeet 3 days a week, then you need a more specialized gun.

Use a cheap shotgun, if you get hooked on skeet or trap, then think of investing in a more specialized gun. I shoot for fun in many disciplines, my days of competitive shooting are in the past.

There are many good sites discussing shotgun chokes. They further away the target, the tighter the choke (full) to keep shot pattern together.

Don't let anybody convince you that you need a $10,000 Perazzi to start.

There are specialized skeet and trap chokes available for most shotguns. I have a nice extended choke for skeet and trap use on my benelli nova.

The 870 or Mossberg 500's are fine for trap. Just not as nice as a high end over under or autoloader, but in my opinion more fun. (like I said, I love my benelli, which is also a pump).

Generally speaking when it comes to barrel choice, the best choice is a long barrel with a vented rib and a dot sight about halfway up the barrel. Some may not like the dot sights, but I do.

The three shotguns I have are the Winchester Model 12, Mossberg 500, and Remington 870. They are all great guns to shoot with in my opinion. Although I have a soft spot in my heart for the Model 12(my first shotgun). I started out teaching myself how to shoot skeet. I would throw them up and shoot them alone. You get very good at it eventually and when someone else throws for you you can hit pretty much every one. Other than the ones hitting you in the head.
I guess you could liken it to me starting to play guitar on a 12 string. It made me that much better when I then "moved" on to a 6 string.

thanks alot for your replies!!!

regarding the leght of the barrel, will 18.5 or 20 inch do it?

and sorry for the stupid question but what is the difference betwen trap and skeet???

For informal shooting at thrown targets, your gun will be fine. If you're shooting on a proper skeet field, your gun will function OK, with one problem. It's real disadvantage is that it will be very easy for a new wingshooter to stop the barrel once on target, and miss. You need to either swing through the target, or maintain a proper lead ahead of the bird. An experienced shooter can overcome this, but it may create problems for a newbie.
