So im working on a new build, FINALLY settled on doing a .284, with a long throat to shoot the heavies. brass seems to be pretty limited for choice, and iv been a huge fan of lapua brass for quite a long time now. so i was thinking of picking up some lapua 6.5-284. iv been reloading for quite a while but have had the luxury of just always being able to get quality ready to go brass, so this is my first venture into necking up cases. iv been reading and googleing away and pretty sure iv got it figured but just thought i would make a quick post here and have you guys give me the yay or nay on it, to make sure i havent missed any thing.

1)buy brass
2) get a .284 (7mm) expanding mandrel for my K&M expanding iron.
2) lube mandrel with imperial sizing wax
4)expand brass working it over the mandrel slowly
5) visual inspection for any case deformation
b) neck turn down doughnut at base of neck (i hear this is common with lapua brass as the shoulder tends to be thicker then the neck)
6) run threw full length sizer and trim as necessary. (length, neck thickness etc)
7) load and shoot
8) inspect for any doughnuting of brass around neck/shoulder junction
9) reload as normal

am i at least headed in the right direction with this haha?

thanks for any help / advice

I usually just load them up with a bunch of junk 6.5 bullets and a good fast powder load and pull the trigger. Necks come out more square at the mouth and more even thickness. I just did a couple dozen 300 WM in a 375 Ruger a little while back and they came out pretty good, better in fact than the ones I ran over the expander mandrel. I made 100 rounds of 35 Win just fired 100 factory loaded 30-40 Krag and voila.........35 Win.............made up 100 308 from 7-08 a while back when 308 brass was scarce, but 7-08 was plentiful...........made 358 Win from 308 the same way for my boy's 358........hence my shortage of 308 cases.

no clue about all this but I had a gf before with whom I practiced necking alot. ;)

...But did you inspect her doughnut?

All I did with my Lapua brass was run them through (with some Imperial wax, of course) a 7mm neck die. I chose a Hornady because of its long expander ball, because it's cheap, and because it was available locally. Of the raw cases that had nice round mouths (which was almost all of them), I chamfered the inside prior to going through the die - the ones that weren't round, I bumped them into the expander button, then chamfered, then ran them through. Easy like pie!

I loaded them up with the bullet jammed .015 and shot them. I never bothered with the doughnut thing until load 4 which, at that time, they were starting to get problematic in that you could feel them when seating a bullet (I use a bushing die). So, throw on the expander ball, get the doughnut pushed to the outside, and turn it off.

Seems to have worked well for me. What does your build consist of?

If you had a 270 die, you could run your 6.5 x 284 cases over that expander button first, and then the 7mm button.
This breaks it into 2 operations, but will result in straighter necks in my experience.

I have a 284 and neck up 6.5 X 284 brass. I put them through a 277 expander before the 284. I have no doughnuting at all. Get the K&M mandrel window riser so you can see the adjustments needed

No doughnuts? What brand of brass are you using? I can't see how running a .270 button through before a 7mm button would change anything other than ease of sizing. Your chamber will ultimately dictate where that neck/shoulder junction is and thus, the location of the thicker shoulder material, wouldn't it? And through successive firing & sizing cycles, that material will keep migrating forward, itty bitty bits at a time, won't it? How many firings on your brass, Jim?

This is the first I've ever had to deal with dognuts, so I know very little. Is it an inevitable thing? Or do some get them and some not?

Pardon me if this detracts from your thread, ultimate_monkey - not sure if you could benefit from others that know more about this than I do.

Thanks,
Rooster
