i'm just getting into duck/ goose hunting and I am looking at a shot gun. Are there any recomendations out there? Anything that I shoudl be looking for when I buy my first gun?

1. 12 gauge. It's the most common because it's most versatile.

2. Get something that feels comfortable to carry and handle. If it doesn't fit you, you won't shoot it well, even if it's the most popular shotgun on the market or all the experts say it's the best.

3. Probably a pump action. Remington's 870 is the benchmark, but if you like others go for it - some are certainly arguably better in one way or another. Just make sure you understand what a different gun offers you compared to an 870 and that you feel the cost difference, if any, is justified. (It's your money, you're the only one who has to believe it is justified.) E.g. I personally would prefer a Mossberg 500 because of the position of the safety but at the time I wasn't thinking of that and bought an 870. I'm not unhappy with it.)

4. If you think you might be deer hunting in the future and if you think that might be in an area where regulations or terrrain features make a shotgun with slugs appropriate, consider the package deals on 870s and Mossberg 500s that include an extra barrel, rifled for slugs. They are good value. (Maybe other makers offer packages, too, or at least accessory barrels, so don't get hung up on this to the detriment of its primary role, your duck & goose hunting.)

5. Keep reading. Other people will have lots more to add.
