I broke down after years of sitting on the fence and bought a CZ-858 Tactical-2. I like it. Milled receiver, looks to be rugged and very straight forward. I also liked how it came with the necessary accessories to get started. 4 mags (2 surplus, 2 looked new), a bayonet (not really needed but nice for the complete kit), mag holder and cleaning kit. The newer rifles are darker than the previous imports and in my opinion look better.
After looking it over. This rifle is very easy to disassemble. The rifle does however look crude compared to an AR or other modern rifles but still it's pure functionality has a certain appeal to it. The trigger was a nice surprise since there was a lot of travel but it was smooth with a clean break. That's a nice trigger on a service rifle. I was happy. I even liked the iron sights with the simple elevation adjustment. The part that surprised me the most was the safety. I really liked it. Click it on with your right thumb, and off with your right index finger. Felt very natural, and best of all you could tell just by the feel on your right hand when the safety was on. You instantly know that it's on. Very simple but very effective.
The only issue I had were that the mags seemed very tight and the mag release wasn't that easy to get at. Mag changes will take some practice. Also I think I'll be looking into the mag release extenders.
Design wise, there is one flaw. The Germans got it right in 1942 and finally firearms are getting it right these days. The charging handle should be on the left side for right handed shooters. I'll be looking into some of the aftermarket solutions for this.
My first impressions out of the box, are that this will be a very fun rifle. I'm looking forward to testing it out at the range or maybe some day for some deer hunting in tree slash areas. My expectations are battle rifle accuracy only. So 2-3 moa. I don't expect this to be a really accurate rifle. Fun yes. Super accurate, probably not (especially with surplus ammo).
I ordered mine from Reliable (Site sponsor) out of Vancouver. $675 plus tax and shipping.
