newbie/ first time questions/gun choice

ok folks, I have been invited for a trap shoot at a local range this weekend, and I have decided to go for ####s and giggles....

my question is, is the gun I will be taking( my only option) is a model 10 C - Trap Grade 12 guage made by remington( in 1908 to be exact) with a full choke sporting a 30" barrel....http://www.remington.com/library/history/firearm_models/shotguns/model_10.asp

I have shot at pigeons with a trap thrower( tripod, big spring jobie) and done well, mind you im told that hitting those birds are alot easier than at the range.....

so how big of an eye opener is this going to be and is my gun going to help or hinder my chances as opposed to a better/newer gun with say a 28/26 "modified or improved choke.......

Assume your shooting for fun so take the Remington and enjoy. If your progressing after that and want to move up to a more dedicated trap gun there are all kinds of options and guns to go towards. Lot to be said about a comfort zone and if that Remington works well for you stick with it and try other guns along the way to see what you may want to move on to.

Most trap shooting I do is for fun and shooting a 22 with a 1964 Browning Auto Five with a full choke and 28" barrel is just fine with me. Occasionally break out my Double Automatic Browning with afull choke barrel.

You said it, REM. Almost any shotgun can be used for trap. Obviously some are inherently better than others for the task, but chances are you'll do best with a gun you're familiar with.

If you really get into the game, there's a high likelihood you'll want to add another shotgun to your collection - one that is designed specifically for trap and that fits you perfectly. When that time comes, your performance will probably dip for a while until you get used to where the new gun is shooting.

For now, using an unfamiliar gun would probably lower your score, not improve it.

I think that gun is just fine. Even kind of cool If you shoot any handicap it will be great !! Older model trap grade guns are really kind of neat to own and shoot. Best of luck to you.

You'll have a lot of fun with that gun and the bbl length is perfect for trap in an auto or pump gun since the receiver will extend the sighting plane beyond 30" (the longer the better in trap). The recoil is a little stiffer in early pump guns like yours and the Win Mod 12. For break action guns, 30" is the minimum you want in trap with most single bbl guns in 34" or 32" and most O/U in 32" or 30".

And if you really want some fun on the trap range, try shooting doubles with that corn-shucker of yours, it brings out the best in people!!!

Thats for sure. I tried to do wobble trap with an 870. Hard to get 2nd shot off unless its straight up and out. Looking at a beretta 391 now

Definitely shoot the Remington. It's a classic. Don't be surprised if you get some people interested in your gun. A Remington 10C Trap isn't seen on the line every day.

For sure you will get a crowd around that gun. Guys will kind of look at it out of the corner of their eye, thinking it's a regular pump, then go Oh, it might be a model 12 Win...no it must be a Remington 31.....no, and then they'll pick it up and grope the hell out of it! "I've never seen one of these in over 50 years!"
