Hey everyone, I just joined the site and wanted to introduce myself. I'm new to the world of guns but as an avid camper who is now exploring some new areas I'm looking to be prepared and purchase my first handgun and eventually a shot gun this summer.

I'll be using the search feature to get a bit of information on a good starter gun but I wanted to introduce myself since it seems like there is a lot of members in the lower mainland area.

Welcome Press!

You might want to look at purchesing a shotgun first since your an avid camper, that way you can have it with you while camping.

Many decent shotguns out there, do you prefer pump or semi?

Welcome again, and stay safe.

Hello and welcome. Your interest in a starter handgun will get you as many opinions as there are CGN members. My advice would be to pick any .22 that fits your hand well. Once you learn to shoot that one, like the rest of us you'll start looking for the next one. As to the shotgun, it depends on what you have in mind. Again, unless you're large, start with something that's manageable for you, like a 20 ga. And since you're a camper, you might think about one of the single shot Savage Model 24s that come in different calibers/gauges with a rifle barrel above a shotgun barrel. They have one that breaks down and fits into a neat pack. Many years ago I used to fly quite a bit, and carried one in .22/20 ga. as part of my survival gear. If you're thinking of repelling polar bears, get a 12 ga. pump. And practice, in any case.

Thanks for the great info guys I will do a bit of reading but was hoping to maybe start with a 9 mm instead of a .22 as I don't like the idea of buying a gun just for a few months of practice but if it was cheap enough it may make some sense with ammo costs taken into account.
