Hi,

so lately I've been doing alot of shooting and hand loading for my hunting rifles and it has kinda got me thinking I would really enjoy a Tactical/ Target rifle.

I have been reading this forum a fair bit the last few days trying to figure what would best suit my needs. I am looking for something entry level that shoots well out of the box, everything I have read here has directed me to savage as they seem like a great value.

But, I am really having trouble choosing a model and caliber, I expect that a large majority of the time I would shoot at the range however if the urge strikes I may try to snipe a coyote or something

some of the models I am looking at are:

the 10 FCP McMillan or HP
the 12 VLP
the 12 BVSS
and the 12 F/TR (although I would prefer to have a magazine)

any suggestions and advice is greatly appreaciated

Ken if your using a Savage 12F/TR 308 you won't need a mag because the coyote will die with the first shot! I truly like the performance of my F/TR. The 1st ever 1000 yd 3 shot group was inside 11 inches.

A savage 12LRPV in 223 puts 3 rounds inside 4" at 500 yards.
I like the Savage 12's so much I sprung for a 12F-Class in 6.5/284.

You can't go wrong with any of the ones you have listed, however if you are going to walk any distance the F/TR are heavy. As for caliber good starting ones are a .223 with at least a 1-9 twist or faster or a .308.

I would suggest 223 which eliminates a number of the above (all nice rifles by the way). My first choice would be the varmint low profile. That stock fit me really nicely and I would want a det mag for walkabout hunting.

Lighter then all the above too.

If only a bench rifle, then the BVSS would get my nod. I don't really see a need for a RBLP for my style of shooting which can include prone.

For the 223, 70gr Bergers, 75gr Bergers and Amax will do everything and anything you could ever want from a 223. Effective well beyond 1000yds so that takes care of any LR plinking. Would put a big hurt on any coyote inside 400yds.

There are much better wind cheaters like the 6BR and various 6.5's but starting with an affordable rd allows you to spend more time shooting and learning.

Then you can always swap barrels/bolt heads and have whatever you want.

I shy away from the 308 because of costs and recoil. The 223 will anything a 308 will do with a lot less fuss.

Your choices are good, and since you handload already, your horizon is pretty broad. A law-enforcement style of rifle like the 10fp et al is fine, but I tend to agree with MP and think a 223 would be a good target/varmint rifle.

Give some thought to the Savage LRPV or even the Remington SPS Varmint.
