Just a newbie in need of expert's thoughts on brass trimmer.

So, which trimmer and brand is better and/or faster? lath type trimmer? trimmer die? Or a substitute for brass trimmer that can mass trim the brass.

I'm thinking of getting a electric lath type trimmer, but I don't know if they are better then the die trimmer and the manual lath type trimmer.

Any opinion are welcome and thank you.

I started out with the Lee hand trimmer, it's specific to each caliber and is still good for small batches. I now also have a Lyman hand lathe. Can run of a batch of 100 in no time. Still need to debur by hand but the whole deal is much better. IMHO an electric trimmer is only useful for very large quantities.

Lee trimmer is the easiest and cheapest way to start, I think it cost me $20. And it works great

The RCBS case trimmer is a good one. It has very good fine adjustment and can be upgraded with attachments like the 3-Way cutter which trims to length as well as chamfering the case mouth inside and out.

If you want fast, fool-proof and cheap: Lee. If you want (still pretty fast) precise - Wilson (which you can get through Sinclair Intl). If you want really high volume with some precision and damn the expense, a Giraud.

FYI, the Wilson system is faster than the RCBS / Lyman / etc systems that use collets to hold the base of the brass. And it's more precise by far, and it's cheaper or comparable.

Wow thank you all for all the good replies and pictures!

WHY OH WHY????? Now I want a Giraud, but it's too damn expensive! It can be upgraded with a meplat trimmer too!

The old saying is so true..... if you want to play, you got to pay.

acrashb, I think the Wilson is the best value for the buck, but I don't know if I need the mount. I could use a vise and hold the trimmer, which I feel it's good enough. Then again what do you think?

Boo, then the RCBS case trimmer got lots of add on, and the Trim Pro 3-Way is way too attractive, but out of reach as it's $100 plus.

The lee, trimmer set is cheap but I just can't grind though the cases that slow as I will be reloading quite a lot for me and my bro together.

+1

It's pretty slow compared to some of the other trimmers, but I can whip through 100 300win mag cases in under and hour with one in my drill.
Since I only get to the range every few weeks, it's plenty fast enough for me.

Lots of guys just use a vise. I have the clamping mount, but have used it without the clamp - no problem.

i have said it before about the Lee and will say it again.... with either a cam lock or a larger knurled lock ring thats easier to grasp it could be a real contender in speedy case trimming.... i can do 150+- large rifle cases in a hour and that's trim/chamfer/polish but that little lock ring chew's the crap out of my fingers and slows thing's down.

The Gracey takes about 3 seconds per case to trim to length and chamfer inside and outside. Works like an electric pencil sharpener.
