The rifle caliber has about the same potential of a 30-30 winchester which has been staple for hunting for years. Yes you can hunt with it. Accuracy on mine is about 4 inches at 100 yards. Reliable absolutely.

It is neat carbine and you can shoot it with surplus rounds without breaking the bank.

BUT do not hunt with said surplus rounds. Far as I know, all milsurp is FMJ, and FMJ are (to the best of my knowledge coast-to-coast) illegal to hunt game with. When they shoot people, they want to the round to pass through as clean as possible, make it easier for the meds to tend to the wounds, less likely critical wounds. When we shoot game though, we want to impose on them a quick, most humane(I guess) death. I believe this is the reasoning behind it, and makes good sense to me. A deer with a clean hole right through it missing all vitals, could likely last a long time, and live an agonizing remainder of life due to infection and pain, then death results, possibly weeks later.

Yes for hunting you want to use some Soft Tips, Which can Be purchased from Wholesale sports or other Retailers.

As for normal Plinking ammo avalibility, well click the Canada ammo link at the top of the screen, you get 1,120 rounds for $169 bucks. That's pretty good deal.

I've never had the chance to really put it's accuracy to the test, but my Friends SKS was hitting the target 200m away and shot really flat. So hard to say. I enjoy the rifles.

Good rifles, very reliable and inexpensive. Like it was mentioned earlier, they shoot kinda like the 30-30, so you may want to keep your kill shots under 200 yrds. Winchester and Remington make hunting ammo for rifles chambered in 7,62X39.

as far as a fun gun, you can't beat the sks for it's many great features. First off is the price, second is availlablity of accessories from stocks and scope mounts to bipods ect and 3rd is availlability of cheap surplus FMJ ammo and reasonably priced quality hunting ammo (SP).
What I have found as far as hunting goes, I dressed one in a montecarlo raised cheek synthetic stock, got a scope mount drilled and tapped to the receiver (bypass ALL receiver cover scope mounts) and got my front open sight and bayonet mount removed. This rifle is the sh*t for hunting in the bush where shots are close, she swings and shoulders fast and the light recoil enables a quick second shot if need be. Mine has performed exceptionally on mule deer within and out to 100 yards. I am sure deer sized game can be taken out to 200 yards with this rifle but have not encountered that scenario in the field yet. For the open country, i prefer a flat shooting, bolt action magnum or a semi auto 308 (m14s :D ) , but in the thick not so open places where the shot has to come quick, the sks has been an excellent rifle for my needs. just think of it as a semi auto 30-30 as thier ballistics are very similar.
30-30 Federal 125gr sp at 200 yard zero, hits +3.3"@100 and -16.3"@300
velocity 2090fps@100 dropping to 1320fps@300, energy in foot pounds is 1210fp@100, 770fp@200
7.62x39 (sks) PMC 125gr sp at 200yrd zero, +3.5"@100, -14.8"@300
velocity 2046fps@100 dropping to 1583fps@300, energy 1161@100 and 893@200yrds.
1000 foot pounds of energy on impact with the animal , is in my opinion, the desired minimum to kill deer sized game, though with a well placed shot 800 foot pounds would be bare minimum.
With the semi auto action and the ballistic comparison, a straight shooting decent grouping sks , also in my opinion :D , beats out the 30 30 as a brush gun in all counts but one, you have heavier gr bullet selection with the 30 30.
you really should get one hehehe :D

I'm thinking about getting my hands on a SKS also...

Don't they have the reputation not be a precise rifle? I thought they would have been more of a plinking then hunting rifle...

How much should I expect to pay for a sks? in what condition?

which SKS should I get? which one is most common?
Russian SKS
Chinese SKS
Yugoslavian SKS
Romanian SKS
Albanian SKS

what type of sks you get mostly depends on you (they basically will perform about the same) the chinese norinco sks's are cheap and have chromed barrels which is nice(you can also get a "D" model from norc which has a detachable AK -47 mag) , yugo's are more for the collector (and do not have chrome lined barrels), albanian sks....ive only ever seen one once, i dont think they are very common here.
