Newbie on SKS, Is this a good deal?

OK if give up on waiting for SIR so guys since I know your all pros here I need some help, A really good friend of mine wants to get rid of his SKS rifle, hes selling it for 300 bucks cause I know hes been advertising it for that, but he told me he will give it to me for $250 since he knows im in school and going through a rough time and stuff. I know for a fact that the rifle isnt a yugo, russian, or a SKS-D so im guessing Chinese of some sort maybe a norinco, It comes in a ATI black tatical stock, I think the model is called fiberforce aswell as comes with a scope mount (no scope) I know this gun is completely taken care of and was barely shot. The condition is amazing since I was with him since he shot it last........ Is this a good deal? I want to check with you guys first.
 
It's not a deal so much as a normal price. If you're going through a rough time I would say let it slide and bide your time until a deal comes along and you can afford it.
 
for $250, buy it and a crate of ammo and go to town. sweet guns to plink away all day with and thats a fairly average price. not like its a tack driver but lots of fun and cheap to shoot. if its in decent shape, i wouldnt have a problem spending $250 on another one. thats about what i paid for mine new, but the guy was in a hurry to sell it.
 
Personally, with the RUSSIAN SKS rifles having arriving in Canada, I would recommend that you pick up one of them... Not only is it a piece of history, with the quality that they have been refurbished to (at least the one's I've seen) they might as well be new... (with a little handling wear)

Heck, if you hold out for an un-issued one (have not seen one personally) you will have gotten a piece of history & a collectable rifle all in one...

P.S. I have nothing against the Chinese SKS, but, with prices having gone up recently, I don't see them being as good a deal as the RUSSIANS!
 
If the Chi-Com has the original stock,and receiver cover. I'd say it's worth around $200 or so. You can get a black bolt Russian refurb from Yorkton Home Hardware for $199 if you only want a shooter. If you want something nicer in an IZH bright bolt get ahold of Ed at Moving Target,they are a bit more money but nicer examples. He might even have a mint one or two left.

True! The russian are by far, of excellent quality. They shoot very well and look awsome!:D
 
I shot an old Chinese and a new Yorkton Russina today. Both shot very well at 100, 200 and 300 yards. I much prefer a wood stock to a plastic one, but if the palstic one turns your crank, that price is a good one.

Hope you can buy a crate of ammo to go with it.
 
I have both, chinese SKS with ATI folding stock, Russian SKS in wood, I like them both, shoots the same, but the finish on the Russian feels better than the Chinese. My Chinese was unissued version, Russian is a refurb. IMO black plastic or wood is depends on the individual, I put the plastic on the Chinese in my younger days (back in 1993), now I much perfer the Russian wood.
 
Chinese SKS's with box mag with crappy Chu reddish stock (that begs to be refinished) shot and uncared for should go for around $150.00, however realistically they sell for $220.00 shipped.

Chinese SKS-D's "should" sell for around $300.00 shipped, but they are going for up to $475.00 shipped.

Russian refurbs "should" sell for around $240.00 shipped, but they are going for $285.00.

Russian un-issued "should" sell for around $280.00 shipped, but they are going for $325.00 "before" shipping.

Being one that likes to rescue Chinese SKS's the dirtier, crappier, and more missing parts (bayos for example). It's a project waiting to be done. I have done a few Chinese SKS's from absolute crap to one I find hard to let go of.

Chinese SKS's with Tapco Fusion stocks usually go for $100.00 more than normal due to the demand for the stocks, however if you're going to get one with an aftermarket stock you should insist you get the original stock and piston cover. It gives you options if you pick up other SKS's.

Because the U.S. bans export from firearms businesses for this items, you won't get any that way. You have to watch EE and get lucky. Expect to pay $125.00 - $175.00 for one. (that's not their true value it's only because they are hard to come by)
 
If your looking at spending under $300 bucks, go for a Russian Refurb. Better quality SKS than the Norc. If your looking for a regular plinker (beater), then I guess it an ok deal. Especially when you look at the addition of the aftermarket stock.

Canada won't because we have no import restrictions on this item (which is a sad irony I know) however sometimes (place tin foil hat on now) the Americans do spot checks before the border. If they were to ascertain you had one you may be liable.

However I am neither a lawyer or an expert so don't listen to anything I say.
