Hi everyone,

I am looking into Tikka 223REM and want to use it for up to 300m.

So,

1. Do I need a HB varmint or a regular barrel will do just fine in 300m?

2. Should I get a 1:8" twist barrel or it doesn't matter in 300m?

Thanks!:)

id go with the varmint barrel if you will be shooting off a bipod all the time.. regular barrel otherwise and i always regreted not getting a fast twist barrel!

If you are buying a Tikka or any factory rifle for that matter, you don't have a choice of twist. The good news is the .223 Tikkas have a fast enough twist to shoot 80 gr bullets. Go with a heavy barrel unless you have to carry it for miles.

From SAKO's website we know there are two barrels: 1:14 and 1:8...

Do they offer both of them in Canada?

The Sako website I looked at said 1:14 for the 222 and 1:8 for the .223 for the Tikka T3 models. The only .223 Tikkas that I know of that come to Canada have 1:8 twist. These will still shoot the 55 grain bullets and will also shoot 80 gr bullets. A 1:14 barrel will not shoot 80 gr bullets.
I think Tikka is missing out by not offering the 22-250 with a 1:8 twist.

I have a HB varmint in 6.5x55. Have not had chance to shoot it yet though, just mounted scope yesterday. Going to start loading up a few rounds shortly.
heres a pic.

It's wearing a Weaver T36 in S/S Optilock extra low rings & bases with a Rocky swivel bipod.

The first Tikka T-3 Varmint Rifles were in the slow twist only- The newer models are offered in both the slow twist and the newer, faster 1/8.
They are clearly marked on the barrels so it`s easy to make sure you get the rifle with the barrel you want.
I would go with the faster 1/8- it gives you a much wider choice of bullet weights.

Snow Dog I ordered mine through local dealer Wortener GunWorks. I hope you get yours in a couple months, mine was on order 2 days short of 9 months.

Maynard I let some lead fly this evening, some nice groups considering what I loaded up, but yes I can't wait to try it at 900m. I might have to give some thought to that echo can idea, even all leaded up it still jumps abit.

To the others thanks for the compliments.

Thank you guys...here is my update

After repeated talk to my wife.... I am going to go with SAKO Varmint Laminate S/S 223REM + Leupold VX-II 4-12 x 40 AO:) :) :) ....but newbie is newbie...how does this Opticlock thing work out?...do I have to install a base on the SAKO or it comes with the base and all I need to do is to intall the Opticlock rings? ....your knowledge is highly appriciated....

You got my curiosity and I checked my T3 Varmint barrel for the twist rate. There is no marking on the barrel about twist rate.

It shoots 50 and 55 gr VMax using H4198 as tight as .45” groups. I haven’t had a chance to try the heavier bullets 64, and 69 gr that just arrived. Given what I have achieved so far I am happy.

I believe Tikka is the Finish name for woodpecker, Tikka sounding like a woodpecker with Tik the peck and ka the echo in the woods. Also all hits in the one hole:)

Dakota,
I picked up a new club gun today for new shooters to try out, stainless T3 varmint in .223. 10X Bushnell going on it next week.

The barrel does have 1:8 twist stamped on the barrel.
I didn't know Tikka made the T3's with a slow twist.

The optilock pieces are seperate, rings/ bases the rings are the same tikka/sako but the bases are different. Tikka's base pin is on the front where as Sako's is on the rear. There is a unitized ring/base but not sure on availability.

Danny Boy re:Tikka's web site all T3's in .233 are 1-8 .222 and .22-250 are 1-14. My varmint in 6.5x55 does not have twist rate stamp but is 1-8.

guninhand according to google dictionary tikka is Punjabi for small piece of meat. Indian dish of small pieces of meat and vegetables marinated in a spicy sauce and cooked on a skewer.

maynard hey I will have to give that one a go to. How are you and Syxx15 making out on the new V-Seeker stock project?
