Newbie question: how to read P4 reticle??

Hi there, I was wondering how to read P4 reticle? like the one on the Schmist & Bender PMii.

especially Im curious about those stair-shape mark, what is it for?
I think it is for finding range, but I'm not sure.

please educate me

I'm guessing it's for estimating the range against an object of known type (on some military scopes it's your typical 1.75m-1.8m tall male)

ok, I got it, they are 400 m – 1200 m holdover (stadiametric) rangefinding brackets for 1 meter high or 0.5 meter wide targets at 400, 600, 800, 1000 and 1200 m).
