Hi, I am just getting into "long range" shooting. I have started with a less expensive rig before dumping a few thousand on a really nice system. I need help or reference to the MOA scope mounts. I have purchased a Nightforce 15 MOA scope mount for on top of my new Savage 10FCP in .308 Win.
If anyone could help me out in explanations or reference a web site that explains it in simple english that would be great.
Imagine a scope that is not adjustable and that is dead parallel to the bore axis. Since the scope axis is parallel to the bore axis and since the scope is sitting an inch or two above the barrel you couldn't possibly hit what it is you are targeting.
So you adjust the scope downward in order that the two axis cross each other at a certain distance but the scope can only be adjusted so much so it will limit the distance at which you can hit what you are aiming for.
So they make mounts which are already tilted downward or "tapered" to give you an extra room for adjustment.
Put simply if your scope has 100MOA of internal adjustment and you put it on a 15MOA mount you will still have 100MOA of adjustment but it will be spanned between -15 and -115 instead of 0 and -100 so you will "gain" an extra 15MOA of adjustment. Well not really gained but moved from a zone where you don't need it (close range) to a zone where it is much needed (long range).
