ok, ive been doing some reading, and Ive come to learn there are many more "flintlockish" designs, including doglocks and snaphaunce locks. What I would like to know is when one speaks of a "flintlock rifle", does it fall under the classification of a FAMILY of locks, or does fall under its own class. Thanks in advance.

The flintlock is in its own class. Recognized by the presence of a ####, frizzen, pan and touch hole - all the others are (as I recall) older designs. The flintlock was "state of the art" for over 200 years.

both answers are correct in a sense. A knowledgeable person would probably refer to the specific type of flintlock ie snaphaunce or miquelet or (french design) flintlock all of which can be loosely described as flintlocks to or by the casual shooter.
