I just got an arms 18 mount for my m14....i am planning on getting a bushnell banner 6-24x 40mm mildot scope or maybe a bushnell 3200 elite 10x if i scrape up the little extra $$. I was just wondering what kind of scope rings i need. i realize they probably need to be high rings, is there a certain brands i need to stay away from or do they all pretty much do the trick? also...quick release rings appeal to me but arms 22 rings ect. are very costly, is there a cheaper alternative? if i just unscrew regular rings off and on my mount will the scope keep zero or are quick detatch rings really necessary? thanks

Geoff - TPS makes an excellent product and probably the best bang for the $$$. Prices range from $82 to $105 pending steel or aircraft grade 7075 AL (which TPS claims is stronger then the steel counterpart).

Burris signature weaver Zee rings are nice too. Less money and still good quality.

I will tell ya straight up....Do not use a banner scope on your M-14, It will not hold up.The optics are crap and does not hold a zero very well. The bushnell elite 3200 10X with mil-dot is an excellent rig for the price and will give you years of good service, and fulfill every funcion well of an M-14 type rifle. If you are going to mount high also look into a rooster 33 cheek piece for a good weld off you stock. I am in the process of doing up my M-14 and these are just repeats of the tips the experianced guys with m-14's on this site were good enough to give me.

ya, i have already aquired a rooster cheekpeice, i have never heard anything negitive about the bushnell banner scope though...has anyone else had problems with these?

Like most things, you get what you pay for. The banner line works but will not out perform the higher end offerings by Bushnell.

The Bushnell 3200 10X Mildot scope is an excellent choice. If you shop around, it can be found for as low as $259.00 new.

Don't let the price decieve you, Ronnie Barrett offers this scope on one of his .50 Cal rifles!!!!;)

For rings, TPS Medium, ARMS #22 Medium or High will work.

For the price, have a good long look at the TPS rings.IIRC, you can get a set of their steel 1" Tactical rings for under $100.00 Cdn. (I paid $110.00 for the 30mm rings a year or so ago).

If you torque the rings to the base the same everytime, your zero should be ok.This is where a inch/pound torque wrench comes in handy.

The ARMS #22 rings tighten up the same amount with their lever system.

Le Baron listing shows $242. Take another 7% off if you are a member.

actually wholesale sports sells the elite 10x mildot for $239.99, thats the cheapest ive seen. anyway, so if i get half decent rings i can probably take them off and the scope will keep the zero if i torque them on the same? that would save me having to pay the extra $ for quick release rings which i dont really need.

If you are not going with QD rings, get the TPS rings. At least they have a hex nut that tightens the ring to the base, which makes it easier to install and tighten/torque.The torque spec for these type of rings is 65 INCH pounds.Tighten the rings the same amount everytime you reinstall your scope and your "zero" shouldbe pretty much bang on.
