Hi everyone,

How does a complete newbie (I only have experience with evil handguns) find out some basic info. on hunting? You know, how, where, when, and with what. I'm not sure I'm ready to slay medium/large mammals, but perhaps killing turkeys or ducks may be more my speed. Mmmm....turrrrrrkey.

I'm very interested in exploring and slaying the outdoors.

Thx.

take the course to get your hunting license

buy books on 'how to hunt ____'

aquire info on where these animals are, gain permission if private land

go hunting

talking to people that you already know will probably yield a few that hunt or have hunted pick their brains be careful with duck hunting though once you taste the sweet nectar that is duck hunting you will forever be enslaved to it's masochistic ways, those mornings where it is miserable and no one should be out duck hunters are, and having the time of their lives wet cold hungry numb hands balls like raisins but those damn ducks are there i know they are i know it!!

................go to your local zoo or SPCA and learn numerous shaggy beasts behaviours. Become "one" with said beasts and you too young warrior, will prosper and always eat well.:D

..........on the more serious side i always learn the most when i am out hunting or scouting. Just get out in the bush plain and simple and stick with this forum as there is some very nice people and very successful hunters here that don't mind questions.

Hey locgo; it might help if you give us your general area too. Here's a few ideas:

Go down to the dark side of your local range. You know, the rifle range. Chat the boys up. I've never met a hunter that wasn't willing to help someone that wants to learn.

If your thinking starting with small game, great. That's how most of us started out I'm sure. Myself, I still love walking the woods with a .22 looking for grouse. :)

Once you've done the course, read the books and other good ideas above do lots of shooting with your rifle that you'll hunt with. Bench, different rests, offhand. Lots.

Then go hunting for your first quarry of choice! Keep us posted. ;)

That, and when you're stuck in the office, and the sleet is vomiting down sideways and bouncing off the window, and the wind is howling around the corners of the building, and you're staring wistfully out into the maelstrom complaining about being stuck inside, your co-workers *will* think you are completely off your rocker...
