Hi all,

I am looking at getting a rimfire or two for plinking. Looking right now at the Ruger 10/22 in .22lr.

A friend mentioned a .22 magnum savage model 93. What is the difference between 22LR and 22 magnum and do I need one of each type of rifle to use the different ammo?

Thanks,
Cactus

22 mag is like a mini 45-70 , will not fit a LR chamber, hits hard, and gives better results, but cost a bit more to shoot.
If you plan to go thru bricks, get the LR.
I like T/C in a semi better than ruger, with the heavy barrel , and wood.
But heck its a choice only the shooter should make.:D

If you do get a Ruger 10/22, be prepared to put additional time and money into making it eject properly. Out of the box they work like crap.

I wouldnt get a .22 mag if its just for plinking. 22lr is way cheaper and there is nothing wrong with the 10/22. It will work just fine as long as you use the right ammo and keep it clean. Most people around home find the federal bulk packs work the best. If you get the 25 shot clip you may have some problems though.

Thanks Fellas,

I plan to go through a lot of plinking ammo. My 3 week vacation starts with the long weekend so a .22LR or two seems to be the right choice.

Only one 10/22?
I'm up to 4 and a Charger.

Hi...my name is Wham-O and I'm a 10/22 addict. :D

17 hmr is worth a look instead of a 22 mag. Further shooter you just have to shoot the neck and up instead of vitals. Shoot flatter and a longer distance. Something else to think about. Love mine.

Unless there has been QC issues at times, i have not nor have my buddies with them experience such problems.
If you strip it and clean it and lube it with break free when you first get it,
there should be no issues as you discribe.
they have run well after that for us.
They can be ammo fussy for some brands.
High velocity round nose , hollow or solid, works best for us.

My 10/22 functions just fine as long as I have a ruger mag in it. I also don't have much issue using the BC steel lips, as long as I choose the ammo more carefully. 10/22 is a great plinker if you like a semi. If you are looking bolt I really think the cooey model 60 is a great choice. Great thing about picking a .22 as a plinker is that you can't go wrong!!

Thanks for the comments guys, I decided to stay with .22lr. In fact, I stopped in at the local gunshop after work and bought a Henry basic lever and a Mossberg 702 Plinkster. I always liked the levers and the mossberg semi felt really comfortable.

Now to get out of work a couple hours early tomorrow and hit the range :)

These are my first brand new guns, what do I need to do with them before I head out to shoot them for the first time? I assume a cleaning and lube?

Thanks
