I was at the Orangeville gun show today and picked up this original Marlin 36-RC. It is in 30-30 and in great shape. I have never heard of the 36-RC but I think it is the pre-version of the 336. Is it??

I have a few questions.

Does anyone know anything about these guns? If so, can you tell me a little about it?
BTW does anyone know what year this was manufactured? Serial number is D138xx

Any info would be appreciated.
Thanks

I have one built in '47 , a 36-A...24" barrel and short mag tube in 30-30
Serial # D13###...looks like yours is '47 also.
I believe they were made from 1936 to 1948 when the 36 was modified to the round bolt Model 336 that continues to this day.
The 36 was an upgraded Model 1893.

In the 2003 Standard Catalog of Firearms they show variations of the Model 36. The Model 36 designation started in 1937 (previously was Model 1893).
The Catalog says that the 1937-1948 model 36's had either no letter prefix or a "B" or a "C".
They don't actually say it but I guess that means that the "D" prefix means post 1948.
It is confusing because then the Catalog states that the Model 336 was introduced in 1948.

The 1st and 2nd variations of the Model 36 had case coloured receivers while the 3rd variation had a blued receiver. That sounds like yours.
There was also a Model 36 Sporting Carbine with a two-thirds-length magazine (6 rounds). Also a Model 36A-DL with a deluxe checkered stock.
The 2003 prices were: Excellent condition - $1000 for 1st Variation, $550 for 2nd Variation, $450 for 3rd Variation.

Hope this helps.
