Well, I see that the Island has some coyote kicking around so I figure I better find out how to hunt these things. I've never hunted coyote before and would like some imput from you guys to get me started in the right direction. What should I buy (ie calls, blinds, decoys, etc). I already have a good rifle and scope so that's not an issue.
Do I call these things, how do I do it, with what type of call, where do I hunt from (blind or stand or from the back of a truck, what?)
Do I use a decoy of some sort, what type?
Where in NL should I hunt them....barren open country, bogs, etc?
As you can see I have no idea how to hunt coyote but would certainly like to get started.

I've got a few bucks to buy some gear so let me know what I should start looking at, and any websites worth reading on how to hunt them.

thanks

Firstly, everything you ever wanted to know you can probably find at Predator Masters ...

Excellent site. Also, Predator Hunt Canada is great ...

Distress calls (eg. rabbit) and coyote imitation calls (howls, barks, whines, etc) are the primary calls. This can be hand calls (which take a little bit of practise, especially the howls) or fancy electronic callers (i.e. Foxpro, Bandit). The latter can get real pricey (eg. Foxpro FX5 is about US$600, iirc) but are very versatile.

Using ample camouflage, being careful about moving around, and playing the wind are all key.

Do I use a decoy of some sort, what type?

Sure, for an extra advantage. The benefit of a decoy is moving the sound of your call, or the coyote's attention in general, to a source somewhere other than where you are sitting. It can be anything from a purpose built moving decoy that plugs into your e-caller, or simply a feather on a stick (or wire). I have a Whirling Woodpecker that I sometimes use.

Where in NL should I hunt them....barren open country, bogs, etc?

Wherever the caribou are. They have shown a preference for open country, just like the caribou, of course. There are everywhere else, even metro St. John's, but nowhere near the numbers you will find in proximity to the caribou. This generally means central/west NL, the Middle Ridge area, and the Northern Pen are the hot spots.

LOTS of good coyote hunting websites, do a search on google

for me I have a rabbit distress call, howler, hurt pup call and mouse squeeker for when they get close.

for you maybe a hurt fawn call would work best. But spring isnt the best time to call coyotes, you may have better luck using the hurt pup call or a howl.

I guess you could just go buy a foxpro, but i find that "cheating" lol I kick it oldskool
