Well, I don't have all the details yet, but after years of letter writing, phone calls to the Minister in charge and magazine and newspaper articles supporting ending the archaic No Sunday Hunting law, Newfoundland hunters won a small victory yesterday. We're now allowed to hunt on Sundays during big game season, starting in October and running to the end of big game season, usually last of December or first part of January.
I'm hoping its an oversight on the part of the Wildlife Dept. not to extend this exemption til the end of small game season, which is over the last of February. Hopefully this will be changed before the regulations are introduced in the House.
It isn't a total victory, by any means, but still good news all the same. The berry pickers, hikers and sundry other tree huggers can still enjoy the great outdoors during the "fine" weather months of the Spring, Summer and early Fall, while the poor working stiffs can actually get a full weekend of hunting in to try and fill their moose tags.
The guys at the Newfoundland Sportsman Magazine will be all over this breaking story I'm sure, and hopefully they'll get the Minister responsible, Tom Osborne, to "fix" the end date to extend until the end of small game season. That will be sweet...too late for me to take advantage of the change now though, as I tagged my moose last month!
