A good pair of waterproof boots are a must.

Enjoy, enjoy, enjoy.

Booked up for hunting trip in late October. Heading for carabou pond near Gander. Have moose, carabou and black bear tags. Hope we can fish too. Never been there before, any tips or advise from anyone who has?

Sounds like you're going with Boyce at Caribou Pond Outfitters.

I hunt all over the island, and that area is one that I do keep going back to.

Moose hunting should be decent, though you're heading out pretty late in the year for non-residents.

There are lots of black bears, so I would expect a good chance of success with that.

Caribou is the most highly sought after prize, the most expensive, and unfortunately, probably the hardest tags to fill. The population is less than a third of what it was 20 odd years ago. Not to put too much doom and gloom on it, because I do hope that you have a fantastic trip. On the plus, antler size appears to be showing signs of returning to its former glory. PM me and I will email you a couple of pics of nice stags from last season.

The advice about having good waterproof boots is critical. I would also bring rain gear. It is WET here.

Oh, and there won't be any fishing in late October. Sorry. :(

The inland fishing season ends at Labour Day weekend. You will most likely encounter sun, snow, and rain and fog (all on the same day).
The main thing is to relax, have fun, and get "Schreeched in" if you can. Should be a good trip regardless of the weather.

Rubber boots preferably lined/insulated like was previously mentioned, and good gore-tex outer shell clothing along with layers will be your best friend. Much terrain is bog, and the weather is not co-operative much of the time, especially in the fall. Travel light but be prepared, you never know when the weather will "turn".

Have a good hunt, best of luck.

If you don't mind me asking what are you paying for the hunt? Newfoundland is on my bucket list if I can save up enough coin for a moose or caribou hunt. I'd have to take my wife so I'd be saving up for two!

OP - my advice................ENJOY, some of the best people in the word call that rock "home". tea and biscuits, unlocked doors, what's theirs is yours, and of course kissing a cod, eating a caper and getting SCREECHED IN!!!! Happy Hunting.....
