Newfoundland Expedition 1585

'The Newfoundland Expedition also known as Bernard Drake's Newfoundland Expedition was an English naval expedition that took place during the beginning of the declared Anglo-Spanish War in the North Atlantic during summer and autumn of 1585.'

^This raid decisively quashed any Spanish Empire designs on the lands which would become B.N.A. * however Portugal continued with its limited goals in Newfoundland, which focused mainly on fisheries.

Newfoundland Expedition 1702 Queen Anne's War

'The Newfoundland expedition was a naval raiding expedition led by English Captain John Leake between August and October 1702 that targeted French colonial settlements on the North Atlantic island of Newfoundland and its satellite, Saint Pierre.'

Queen Anne's War was infamous for the Deerfield Raid which struck deep into Massachussetts. Clearly the memory of this raid has remained in the collective memory of the folks of that region. The First Battle of Bloody Creek Nova Scotia was one of the actions of this war.

Newfoundland Expedition 1796.

The War of The First Coalition

'On 28 August 1796 this combined Franco-Spanish squadron of 20 vessels, carrying 1,500 regular troops, appeared off the coast of Newfoundland'

This raid seems almost out of place in history. The well prepared British force in Saint John's managed to bluff the Spanish Franco force the defenders were vast in number when this was not the case. The invasion force struck at defenceless Bay Bulls, causing massive damage and taking many prisoners.

See a functioning military is useful. I doubt if people wearing rainbow wigs would have accomplished anything.

It is hard to imagine that from the Caribbean to Labrador, war was a recurring theme in colonial times.
