I saw a beautiful little rifle the other day. It was built by Newton (proprietary action) and was originally a .256 Newton but has since been rebarreled to 25-06. It has double set triggers and the stock is a classic style; it is very trim. I've never seen one of these before. Is anyone familiar with them? Are they good rifles?

They are a very strong rifle, way ahead of there time.A friend of mine has one in 35 Newton. It is about the same as a 358 Norma mag.

I thought the .256 Newton was actually a 6.5 (.264) and that the .256 monniker came from the pre-rifled bore size such as the relationship between a .300 magnum shooting a .308" bullet. You could actually be looking at some sort of 6.5-06 wildcat. Was the barrrel actually stamped .25-06, and did it appear to be the original barrel?

I've seen the rifle you speak of... It's very nice & seems to be priced right for what you are getting...

Do you know what model that one is.The one dusty61 has is a second model. On the double triggers the front trigger is turned around backwards.

Ross Siefreid wrote up a nice article in Rifle/Handloader a while back on the Newton rifles and Ken Waters did an article in Handloader a while back on them also--if you can find them, they have some good info in them.

I am very familar with the Newton and managed to acquire some of them. Their unique features are their bolt lugs, the take down feature, and on some versions, the "segmental" rifling designed by Pope. The double set triggers work fairly well. One of mine has a Noske side mount with a Hensoldt 2 3/4 scope claimed to be an apochromat ... not coated but as sharp and contrasty as any of the newer T* Zeiss I have used. Be kind to the stock as it is an unusal design to accomodate the takedown feature.... the bottom floorplate is released by the catch in the trigger guard... the floor plate drops down and is used as handle to unscrew the forward guard screw and the action and barrel tilts up and off the stock. The rear of the action is held in by a grooved steel fitting that is held in by a throughbolt coming up from the pistol grip cap. Neat arrangement. AP

What would be a 'good deal' for a Newton rifle that's been rebarreled to .25-06, then? [Looks just like the one in the pic above...] :?:

According to Otteson, the second Newton action design is not as good as the first. In a way, Newton and Ross had something in common. Both were promoters, had unusual ideas, and understood the advantages of high velocity.
