Well I think I need a new calling rifle, I was thinking about a .17 Remington, or should I get a 22-250? I already have a 204 Ruger and I love it, but the little 17 has always interested me, anyone own a 17? How well do they perform on Coyotes and Foxes? How far could you comfortably take a shot at a coyote? 300 yards? Thanks.

I'd say about 300 yards would be about right for a 17 Remington. Your 204 will have longer effective range I would guess. Maybe put a .220 Swift on your list.... they are cool rifles. Or even look at something with more juice like a .243 or 6mm? There doesn't seem like there would be much difference between a 204 and a 17, but a guy can never have enough rifles.

.17 Rem. is good for close range work. Start getting out around 300 yds. and wind becomes a huge issue. Coyotes are also tough critters, if you don't properly place the first shot you'll be shootin' the south end of a north bound dog and the little bullet won't do it. Most .22 centerfires are a great choice on up through .243, 6mm and .25-06. It all depends on what you want to do.

Don't you need a .223 wssm ?

Actually, .17 is very nice for pelt damage, but I think you will find that you are reaching for your .204 instead because the .17 is quite lite.

IMHO

for a calling rifle, lots of reach isnt *too* important, so anything from 17 Rem to 223 is a real good choice. Of course the 17 has lots of reach, but that smaller bullet sheds velocity downrange quite fast, and limits anchoring power on coyotes from what Ive read. Certainly it has a solid rep as being a cartridge that is very fur friendly.

Id personally stick with the 204, or pick up a milder 22, like a Fireball, Triple Deuce, or the 223. :)

My next coyote rifle will be in .17rem. I shoot more foxes than coyotes and I'm a trapper on the side so a pelt saver round is what I'm looking for.

If a coyote is outside the range of a .17rem I probably cant hit the little prick with any round.

I currently shoot a .222 mostly followed by a .243 then followed by the 22-250.

243, 6mm, 257 Bob, 25-06, 260, all excellent fur unfriendly coyote cartridges

I have a feeling a 270 Win with a 90 gr Speer TnT would impress them too :D

The local coyote guy here where I live uses a 17 Rem and has for many yrs. His biggest problem is he tries to shoot em when they are to far out , but still gets his share of them. I know he has kill lots at the 300 to 350 yd and a few even farther.

Having used 110 grain V-Maxs from a .270 to shoot groundhogs I can tell you that they can do some hideous damage!

Doing anything with the fur? If not, go 25-06 :D Plenty of 'anchoring power'

:D 25-06 is my small rifle :D

only problem is when using 120grn bullets the bullet overpenetrates a small target like a yote without expanding much, great for deer. The 87grn noslers work better for yotes. :D

I forgot to mention, I will be saveing the furs, I dont know what it is about the 17 that interests me... on the other hand I wouldnt mind a 22-250 AI.... ah decisions, decisions.. maybe I'll get one of each!
