I'm getting lot's of practice in with my 10/22, getting some consistent results with open sights at 50 yards (not consistently good, but consistent ;) ). An awesome member here was able to help me out with a scope for it, so that's my next thing to experiment with. Unfortunately my OCD doesn't allow me to make a decision without way to much research so here I am asking for opinions. Of course I want to have half a dozen different guns right now, but my budget won't allow that to happen. I had thought about getting a shotgun for my next gun, but the thing is I am very much enjoying going to the outdoor range with my buddies and punching paper. I think demolishing pumpkins and other various types of squash at the local gravel pit or target shooting with a shotgun would get a little boring after a while (I still intend to get one eventually and try trap).

My question is this, is .223 the next logical progression from the .22 rimfire? I still intend to thoughrally enjoy my 10/22 but I think I would like to get a little further down range eventually, the local range is building a 300 yd backstop this year. I don't see myself hunting in the coming 1 to 2 years and the .223 seems like reasonably priced ammo compared to say a .308.

Or maybe a 30/30 that I can target shoot and would also be a reasonable deer gun eventually? What I'm getting at is something reasonably cheap to shoot with a reasonable amount of recoil for a day at the range.

Thanks in advance

.223 wouldn't be a bad option.A 30-30 won't get you out to 300 yards. Have you thought about a .243? Good for target shooting, not much recoil and then you could use it for deer hunting in the future or varmint.ammo cost would be more than a .223 but overall it is a more versatile caliber.

.243 did cross my mind. I just don't see myself doing any hunting this season or next and I want to shoot as much at the range as I can so ammo cost was more of a concern. Good input though, thanks.

I chose 308 for the exact same thing. Ammo isn't very expensive (I've since started reloading and its even more reasonable now). I can shoot almost all afternoon before I start to get twitchy and it makes a great hunting round.

My next rifle though, is going to be a 223. I can shoot it all DAY. And will be learning how to hunt coyote's this next year hopefully.

I would stay away from 30-30. I have a Marlin 336. Love it. Grew using it as a deer rifle. Does that great out to about 200yrds. It is not a target rifle though. Even with a scope on it I get rather large groups.

Just my $0.02. Hope you find what your looking for.

I hope one day I'll be re-loading! It sounds like the way to go for both quality control and cost. I just think .308 might be a little much, but thanks for the .02 cents, much appreciated. Part of me wants to go right to 30-06 or .308, but I'm thinking baby steps :)

There's always talk of a shortage of ammo. Fortunately there are non-US sources so you're all good in that department. Plus you can always get into reloading sooner and tailor your ammo to your little heart's content.

223 is where you want to be at this point in time.
