Next hurdle.... the Norinco stock screws

Hi All.

Got the flash hider changed out. See thread a few lines down. Many thanks again to all who helped out with constructive advice.

New problem. Trying to tinker with the stock a bit. Bedding, finish, etc. Trying to remove the internal metal on the stock to get the cosmoline off and maybe paint the external bits. So I run into these screws that look like a cheapo trigger lock screw. (See pic below)

So, naturally tried a cheapo trigger lock key. Too narrow. Snap ring pliers did not work. Nor needlenose pliers. Even tried my enfield bolt removal tool to no avail. I had 'security' screwdriver bits - too small.

Please tell me: Any secrets to getting these off, or am I going to have to sacrifice a socket to hand-make a tool to open these up?

Stock liner screw driver.....

It's a real thing!

The plastic stocked rifles screws come out fairly easily. The wood ones I've run across...... Not so much.

I have a large(ish) flat head screw driver that I filed down to fit.

I have since purchased the proper driver but from brownelles.

A little bit of advice. If you are going to make one, from a screw driver, use a file. If you use a grinder or dremel the heat you put in it will make it brittle and it will just break.....

This tool works well. You could also use two broken drill bits clamped in vise grip pliers.

The answer above works. So does measuring the distance between holes in the screw and drilling appropriately sized holes to a depth of o.5" or more in a small hardwood block. Place the drill bits with the drill bit shanks extended from the block of wood and voila - a temporary tool.

My needlenosen (And the snap ring pliers) just bent and twisted rather than moving the screw . Thinking when I get home I'll try the stiffer/beefier Leatherman needlenose or the vise grip and drill bit idea. Thanks all!

I've used a set of beefy snap ring pliers in the past as well.

Put a punch in each hole, and put a large screwdriver inbetween them. Use the screwdriver as a lever and turn against the punches, you may have to hold them up a little bit if they don't fit snug. This is the method I've used in the past on a Mosin.

I just bent a piece of spring steel into a u shape then locked them into a large pair of vice grips and turned. Sand the cut ends smooth before you insert them. They will bottom out on screw holes and scratch the bottom of screw hole on stock. You won't notice scratches once screws are replaced.

I made one from tool box bits and pieces. Brass plug that I filed down the hex edges and drilled two holes on the face and inserted roller pins. Works like a charm!
