next question, scope power for 1000 yards

I use 8.5-25X50 Leupolds and Weaver T-36's out to a mile. I just invested in a 12-42X56 Nightforce though... hehehehe. If you can afford it, consider something variable power with SIDE FOCUS up to at least 25X so you can dial back and you can deliberately shift out of focus to observe mirage and wind.

You can always dial back, but there's no substitute for having sufficient magnification.

6X24 is the most useable mag range for non competition use. I think the Elite tactical is a great buy with the features and optics offered. I use several of th AO mil dot 6x24 and are wonderful if you can live with the limited adj.

Pity we don't have much Nikon stuff because they are coming out with some really nice items too.

Big one is glass quality. As was said, better to get good glass then high mag/mediocre glass. If all you want is to 'see' the target, the Super Snipers are a great buy and 16 or 20X are available for sale. I vote for the 16X in this case.

If you want to compete, get the best glass you can afford. At 1000yds, it matters. Elite 4200 is excellent glass for decent costs. Looking forward to the Elite 6500 and Sightron SIII which are targeting Nightforce for optical quality at high mag.

I use Leupold Mark 4 8.5-25x50. It's nice to have the magnification when the mirage isn't there. I'll usually back off to 16x when it gets bad. For glass quality I think it's a great bang for your buck. Plus if you would ever need warranty on it for any case, Alberta's not that far away.

I've used a Leupold 36x for years with great success. If I was to rebuy i'd go sawgunners route, so I can do some coyote work. It's too bad leupold doesn't make a 8.5-35.

24x is probably perfect for "F" class. I don't like objectives which are too large for a number of reasons.
First, I don't shoot"F" class at night so light gathering isn't an issue.
Second, I like to mount the scope as low as possible since it makes shooting the rifle more comfortable.
Third, a large objective bell hangs too much weight out ahead of the rings. Fourth, big objectives are, to my eye, ugly!
I have used 36x scopes on occasion since 1982 and actually don't like them as well as the 24x. The limited depth of field and limited field of view is a problem to me.
30mm tubes are nice because they yield greater adjustment range but, since the 300mm tubes are all attached to big objectives I stick with 1 inch tubes and live with it. Regards, Bill.
