NIB gun? Should the bore be clean?

I just bought a new firearm. After I received it, I ran a clean patch soaked in hoppes through the bore. It came out FILTHY!!! just as they look after a long range session. Is this normal? I was under the impression that a new gun would be unfired. Was I sold a used gun as new? Interested in your opinions.

Clean patch is on the left. First patch through is next.

Bolt face.

New firearms require a cleaning before, to get rid of machining oils and metal debris. That's most likely what you're looking at. Any brass markings in the receiver and bolt /extractor ?

The Horror !
Every gun I have bought "Factory New" was test fired .
Be it a $600.00 870 Wingmaster or my $450.00c Vanguard and last but not least my .257 Wby Accumark.
Sometimes there is some type of oil as well.
Tight Groups,

I haven't bought many new guns, but those I did had oil and crap in the barrels. Some were supposed to have been fired at the factory for accuracy tests.

A friend of mine bought a Remington 700 Tactical 223 from a well known company that many of the members of CGN deal with. It was supposed to be NEW but the bore was dirty and lots of brass on the bolt face. The head spacing was so tight it pealed brass from the base of the case. If the factory tested the gun they would never have shipped it. It went back to Remington and was replaced with a new unfired model.

I was warned to clean a CZ452 before I shot it. I lost count as to the number of patches and scrubs went thought before it came clean. Best advise I received.
I would suggest everyone clean any new gun if for no other reason than your own peace of mind.

I have been in the Savage factory and watched the rifles being made. Each one is proofed and fires 5 ordinary rounds to test mag feeding, ignition and extraction/ejection.

About 1 in 100 is zeroed to make sure the sight dimensions being used are correct. After shooting wet Hoppes patch is pushed through. A very minimal cleaning.

I'm kinda surprised that no one has commented on the condition of your bolt face? All the new rifles I have , have never looked anything like that one of yours. FS

Thanks Fassteel, Yes the boltface was what concerned me also, & it just seems strange that a new gun would be sold with such a dirty bore. I am concerned that this might be a returned firearm sold as new. The box it came in was heavily re-taped. I guess it's kind of like buying a car, once it's been driven by someone else, it's NOT new anymore. Not knowing how many rounds were shot kind of annoys me. If it was shot at the factory, it would have been nice for them to have included the target. I will take the gun to the range today, & if it shoots fine I will just keep my mouth shut.
