i have a couple of questions for all you sks experts up here.

will this rifle be filled with cosmoline? i know there are lots of ways to get it out, but whats the least stressful way.

how do i tell if its an "unissued" or issued refurb...

along with the rifle i ordered 100 rounds of cz surplus ammo from frontier firearms (like on the same order), but when the gun came the ammo didnt come with it. even today (the day after i got the gun) the ammo hasn't shown up. is this normal? separate shipping or something? pr should i give em a call?

how would i unload with the 5/20 rnd fixed mag. i don't want to get into the specifics of why i have THIS mag, and not the normal hinge plate mag, but this big useless mag is really annoying. and really welded. but anyway, say a round is caught in the mag how would i unload like with a hinge one.

my bayonet is black but the bolt silver. all the russians ive seen im sure had silver bayonets, is this true in reality?

when loading strippers, do you all just take off 5 rounds and then load it?

is there ANY benefit to having the 5/20 rnd fixed mag?

does this look like a nice sks? think it will shoot well? I'm dying without that ammo! this being my first gun and everything.

thanks for all the help ! :ar15:

You should read the sticky SKS threads. Many of your questions will be answered.

Was your SKS in a Canada Post package? Ammunition is not shipped via Canada Post.

The recent Russian imports have not been packed in cosmoline. They are only in a thick machine oil.

It's a refurb. 1951 Tulas did not originally come in a laminate stock.

Gun came by CanadaPost. Ammo will come by DHL Courrier.

The black bayonet is another way to tell it's a refurb, along with the Xd out numbers on the stock.

No with a 5 round limit why have a 20 or 30 round mag.

Yes it does look like a good SKS. Never know till you try it how well it will shoot. Might have a non-chromed barrel and or a springed firing pin.

first of all. thanks a lot for the answers!

so with the thick machine oil, do i need to do a full cleaning still before my first firing?

does DHL courier take much longer?

it gave me a hinge normal mag as well with the gun. as much as it is just a big waste of mula in the first place should i get that put on or is there SOMETHING nice about a totally fixed big mag?

yeah i was reading some of the sks stickies on here and they were more helpful than on the sks boards even.

is the chromed bore easy to tell? it does not look signifigantly "chromy" when i look down the bore but i havent tried with a bore light or anything.

thanks for your time

Nice Tula you got:)

Clean your sks free from all oil before using it, oil attract dirt so better keep it clean and dry and the gas tube and piston must be kept dry, oil only for very very long storage. For your ammo, usually the courrier should follow soon.
About the mag, depend of your taste, if you like the look of a big mag its ok but for my part, i dont have any big mag on my fews sks. I like better with the original mag but its me. As for the bore, you will see better after cleaning. A chrome bore will be very bright but you can make the test with a drop of cold gun blue. Take a Q-tips and apply a drop of gun blue inside the cleaned bore at the muzzle. If the steel doesnt get black or darker you have a chrome bore. Hope that will help you a bit.

cheers,
Jocelyn

Are you saying that big mag does not hinge to the front and off when you activate the mag release catch?

If that is the case it probably has an internal catch held in place by the trigger group. You are going to want to remve that along with stock to get all that sticky cosmoline off b4 your first shoot any way. Just pop the original box mag back in when you re-assemble.

P.S. After you have removed the receiver cover, buffer spring , bolt carrier and bolt. look for the litte indent about the size of a bullit tip behind the trigger guard. Just push it in and out comes the trigger assembly followed by the mag. If that is the only way you can get that mag I wouldn't bother using it without doing some kind of mod to mag (not the rifle) to make it work right.

so after dissasembly and cleaning, i should just put the hinged mag in? will that work? and yes that IS what im talking about, im not too happy about it to say the least either. also someone on here stated that the new imports dont have cosmoline.. just thick machine oil. whats the real deal? what do you mean here " If that is the only way you can get that mag I wouldn't bother using it without doing some kind of mod to mag (not the rifle) to make it work right.". .. why wouldn't you?

Just my personal preferance about modding the rifle. Any changes you make cannot be reversed. whereas you can always get a new mag. Your choice though you can always get another rifle. Heck you can get refurd SKS by the crate right now if you have a meager 1300 kicking around.

With regards to the mag in question. If you actually have to dissasemble almost the entire rifle to remove it. Then the whole point of that type of non-hindged mag is moot. It's like selling a bike to buy a car with doors welded shut. At least the bike still gets you somewhere. The car at this point is useless.

However i have not had a chance to see how that mag is attatched. I am familiar with how the Tapco removables work and I know that some changes have to be made to the receiver for a Tula to accept them. I believe they only work with an SKS-D. This might be the case with your mag. Which is why it is locked in. "welded" in your words.

Just examine the catch points and I won't be suppised if there is a horizontal groove at the back of it where th front of the trigger group locks in. Thats is how the body of the factory mag stays in place and how the floor is alloud to hinge out without the whole mag being removed.

ok i am sitting here with my rifle completely disassembled, and ive wiped off all the excess oil on all the parts except the bore, now what else should i do before shooting. should rem oil be sprayed on, or rem dry lube? i have a bottle of hoppes, rem oil, and rem dry lube. along with a cleaning kit. someone wanna help?

Run a few dry patchs in the bore and chamber to remove any oil, dont forget inside of gas tube too. After wiping the bore you can use bore solvent and a bore brush if you want to do more cleaning before shooting it. Personnaly, i wipe the oil from the bore, chamber and gas tube and its enough. Wait after you shoot to do a good cleaning, particulary if you fire corrosive ammo. For the metal part, no need to coat them with oil unless you store your rifle for a very long time. SKS dont need lube to work perfect(at least from my experience). Go shoot the beast and enjoy!:)
