Nice old truck pic

Good old M135 Deuce. They were made 1953-56 and soldiered on until the early 1980s when they were replaced by the MLVW which has also been run into the ground over the past 30 yrs. Time to go shopping for another 21/2 ton truck that will last another 30 yrs.

P1954 in Canadian service, go anywhere vehicle, biggest issue we had with them as the vacuum system wipers which failed on even the smallest hole in the vacuum system. Then you had to use the hand wiper, shift gears and drive at the same time! For some reason these things never rusted through!

The "Deuce and a half" was the gun tractor used to pull the American 105mm howitzer that replaced the 25 pounder.
The Quad pulled the 25 pounder and it's limber.

One of the bonus points for the deuce and a half was that the spare tire was on the passenger side so that removing the spare could be done safely away from road traffic.

Not so the MLVW, with its spare on the road side.

"Fetch Bluebell, over..."

I used to drive one of those back in the mid 80`s. We were clearing land north of Toronto and used one of those trucks for skidding logs. We had a ring that dropped over the pintle hitch with three chains attached to it. I often hooked up three full length trees at the same time. Those trees were over 45 feet long and as big as 36 inch diameter at the butt. That truck could drag two of the biggest trees and one smaller one about 24 inches diameter at the same time. It was amazing what it could pull. I keep thinking the truck was a 1959 model but it looked like the one in the op`s pic. If I remember right it was a GMC with a 305 inline six cylinder, automatic with a selector for High/Low, Hilly and level driving.

It certainly had an interesting transmition. I have nver seen another quite like it. The damned thing could pull a tank. But slow. Going up a long steep hill you could get out and walk beside it. I took driver training in them in 69.
