I'm pretty darn happy considering this is my first upland bird harvest with any 20 gauge shotgun at all. Three shots for these two. Yes and no to taken in flight. The first one was spotted at 8 yards. Bang......as it takes flight, flutter & then running bird with broken wing dead on #2 shot. Walked closer in this dense brush, and the darn bird takes flight! How can this be! (f***ing full choke and #6 never again!)
Bang.......and bird down. Okay 1 bird for 3 shots, I really need shotgun range practice very badly.
Was happily surprized to find two very dead birds within two yards of one another. In actual fact I think I'm overchoked for this. Full choke with #6 shot at 8 to 14 yards demands more attention I believe than my 0/U with IC/Mod barrels and 7 1/2 shot. Two broken necks and one broken wing.

A good day to be outdoors indeed. ;)

Yum! I use full choke and #6 out of my 16ga all the time, if you're reasonably close and they're just sitting you can pretty well take the head off, if they fly, just wait a second until they're a little further out. I also use #8's in my 20 (IC/M).

Nice shootin' Joe! We went out for our first goose shoot west of Riverton this morning. Three of us got our limit of Canadas(24) and one duck but the shooting wasn't any hell! Hopefully this got the cobwebs out anyway. I'll probably try for grouse later this week but I don't usually hunt them too hard until the leaves are down. I usually shoot 6's out of my O/U as well but try to go for head shots.
Good Huntin',Mark.

Thanks for your comments guys. I am really starting to feel comfortable with a shotgun again on feathered game finally. I kind of gave up on it during this steel shot introduction in the late 1990s although this never did apply to upland bird species.
Mark it's nice to hear you getting some honkers too! I must admit I've never had success with geese, ever.
What I enjoy the most is the woods wandering with a fairly lightweight gun in hand enjoying all the natural scenery.
Coming home with something is a bonus.

Cheers!

Nice!

Where'd you go?

Snow on the ridge across from me here this AM, at about 5000 feet. It's coming!

Cheers

Hey there Trevor!

Just two kilometers north-west from where I shot that big deer in 2005 with the 30-30.
I always wondered about this spot as it often produces lots of nice deer and is/was plagued with numerous spruce grouse in the past. The added bonus is the nearby oil camp has been empty and closed for the last two years at least.
BTW, I first stopped at our old stomping grounds past the Mahihakan Plant. There is now more ATCO trailers next to the pumphouse nearest to where we would often park before hunting. Lots of nearby construction at Mr Lynx's hangout and a constant line of dump trucks. So I immediately turned around and left this spot.

Cheers!

:D

Dunno that it means much, right now. Almost gone.

Grouse populations look like they had a good spring around here. Gotta get out and have a go at some.

Been eyeballin' a 4x4 WT buck here on the property, opened this AM, so maybe a walk this eve.

Enjoy!

Cheers

Nice 20 - is that one of your shotguns without the disconnector? :p
Fat Tony, yes this is a 1971 made variant. I'm not really sure if the disconnector thing would have made any difference to be honest here.
It's wearing a LNIB full choke barrel, the original full choke barrel and another IC pipe disappeared in my last move. Thankfully the fully rifled barrel is still here somewhere in the gun cabinet.

Cheers!

I got one yesterday with the .410, picked up another one today. I think this is the earliest I've ever been out for Grouse! Tried to post a pic but not sure how to get it out of photobucket.

When you've saved it to your album Mark, there are four options if you click on your saved picture. Choose the last one ensuring it says "copied" in a yellow colored haze, then just use the copy/paste option and put it into your post, using the edit option.

Give it a try buddy.

PS: I was hanging around the same place today and my only company was a pack of wolves. Heard them howling just before I left the forest to get to the truck. Seen the last one crossing the dirt road about 400-500 yards away. Confirmed with a check on the road of thier footie prints. Now I know why game was pretty sparse and skittish this afternoon.
I was too tired to even care about pictures this evening.
