What factory bubba'd 303's do you think were the nicest? I think the Parker Hales look alright.I owned a "Churchill" with schnable forend ,it was pretty nice.I have heard of one by bsa on a p-14 that is supposed to be nice but have not seen one up close.

I have a BSA p-14 sporter. It is an excellent shooter but it is nothing special to look at. The stock is a cut down military one. The metal work is very nice as is the bluing but that was the standard for the time. It was my grandfather's rifle and he got it around 1949.
I have seen a Wm. Powell conversion of a SMLE and it was exceptionally well done, exhibition grade wood and perfect metal work. The Powell would be the nicest I've seen.

The best conversions were not done by companies, but by individual gunsmiths on commission. That being said, BSA made some grand old sporters in the 1920's and earlier for the "Dark Continent" and its great white hunters. Today they are VERY sought after collectibles.

Ellwood Epps made up some very fine Lee Enfield based sporters, some in one piece stocks. I suspect that in the early part of the 20th century gunmakers purchased barrelled actions from BSA, LSA, etc., and used them to make fine sporting rifles in .303 and other calibres. There were some rather workmanlike rifles made up in the '50s and '60s by some of the old gunmaking houses - really the end of an era, because most of these were bought out. There names may have survived, but the gunmaking is gone.
I have a commercially sported G98 Mauser. Plain, restocked, lightweight, a useful hunting rifle. On the bottom of the barrel is "Krieghoff". I guess in the 20s, as in the 50s, any work to keep the doors open was worthwhile.

I have a Parker Hale that was very well done with new Monte Carlo checkered wood, reblued and recontoured barrel etc, but I agree with Tiriaq that the best ones are the gunsmith one offs.

The Parker Hale is a great bargain going for around 300$. I would love to see some pics of great sportsters and not all of them should be restored to milspec.

Here is my Parker Hale, I was actally thinking about selling it but I came to my senses. ;)
