Ellwood Epps made up some very fine Lee Enfield based sporters, some in one piece stocks. I suspect that in the early part of the 20th century gunmakers purchased barrelled actions from BSA, LSA, etc., and used them to make fine sporting rifles in .303 and other calibres. There were some rather workmanlike rifles made up in the '50s and '60s by some of the old gunmaking houses - really the end of an era, because most of these were bought out. There names may have survived, but the gunmaking is gone.
I have a commercially sported G98 Mauser. Plain, restocked, lightweight, a useful hunting rifle. On the bottom of the barrel is "Krieghoff". I guess in the 20s, as in the 50s, any work to keep the doors open was worthwhile.
