I was given about 60 casings (once fired) winchester 270wsm
can they be reloaded or has the plating process harden the casings to much for reloads?

If I can reload, how many times before I should start seeing any signs of overuse?

I have some 280 Rem nichol cases that I form for my 280AI.Some are on there 3 load with no porblems what so ever.

Only issue really that you have to watch for is the nickel plating coming off after a reload or two and pooching your dies.

"...how many times..." Depends on how hot your load is. With brass, when you get one cracked neck, you pitch that one and anneal the rest. Don't think annealing works with plated brass. I believe they're electroless plated. The plating shouldn't come off. Never heard of it happening.

I've found the plated ones to be a bit more brittle than normal brass and not last as long. This was with 38 Sp. though and I didn't bother to anneal any. Don't see any reason that it wouldn't work though.

Some did last long enough to wear the plating off in spots but never saw any peal off.

I have loaded 300 win mag with the nickel plating. To me it seemed a little tougher to do than brass. KodiakHntr is right about the flaking coming off. What if that stuff is shot down your new barrel?

Cant see that happening unless it chipped off prior case and was pushed in. Either way, it wont do anything except blow out the end.....

Like that they don't tarnish, hate that they pooch your dies quicker!

If the steel in your dies is softer than the nickel plating on cartridge cases you have other problems to worry about.

I have loaded many hundreds- maybe even thousands - of plated cases, both straight and bottle-necked, and have yet to have a problem. As mentioned they don't last as long as "regular" cases but I would never chuck out any once fired stuff.

If anyone has any plated cases they don't want they can send them to me for disposal. ;)
