I'm buying one of these scopes and would like some imput from anyone who has used both. Do they both have the same clarity? Reticle is not overly important to me. I'll be using a rangefinder for distance. The NXS is about a thousand bucks more. What do you get for the extra $1000? Clarity is really important for me. I'll be putting it on a rem 700 .308, cadex chassis. Shooting targets out to 500 yards and taking it on a bear/ moose hunt.

I have not seen an SHV, but I did have an NXS 5-22 x 50, my 2nd nightforce and the best scope I have owned. The reason I sold it was the weight. Strapping ~2lbs to a hunting rifle is certainly not for me. What kind of rifle are you looking to put it on?

It's going on a rem 700 in cadex Kit.308. I went with the SHV as I've read that the glass is the same but the NXS has more options. I'm not sure what options you get for an extra $1000. Laser guidance maybe :)

I have owned both. The SHV glass seems to be the same as the NXS, I couldn't tell the difference. If you are doing any real target shooting though, the real target turrets and a zero stop make a world of difference. I just sold my SHV so I could go up to something with a real turret.

And the money difference gets you a scope you could pound nails into a deck with!!

The SHV has excellent optical quality, they just don't build them for the military durability like the NXS lineup. We generally don't need that feature.

Another consideration should be the Sightron line of SIII's. Glass is excellent, good turrets and adjustability. Price is closer to the SHV. Call Peter at Hirsch and you will be looked after.

That's where I got my SHV ordered from. I could still change my mind , I have until Wednesday. So you think the sightron is as good as the SHV?
I'm not overly concerned with the turrets but the clarity of the glass is very important to me. Other than a zero stop what's the importance of the target turrets? Wouldn't both turrets do the same thing?

I've owned both. Have to agree with Schecter 81. I was at the range three weeks ago and went side by side with NXS 5.5-22 with my 5-20 SHV. I couldn't see a clarity difference at equal magnification. NXS is heavier and has better, exposed turrets, but the SHV is not exactly feather weight. It's pretty solid as well. Can't speak to the Sightron, but I'd spend my name on Nightforce, if you ever plan on selling it, down the road.
