night vision and fog/rain/snow

Silly question - do night vision optics allow you to "cut through the fog" and see what you would on an otherwise clear night or does it just let you see the fog with more clarity ? I am talking about earlier generation NV, not thermal imaging stuff or whatnot.

It will not cut through fog/rain/snow.

It won't help at all. Rain, and fog will seriously refract the ambient light that you are amplifying to be able to see.

One night my hunting bud and I were hiking to our hunting spot, and there was a fog rolling in, the night vission would only work at about 3 feet in front of us. The fog acted like white screen and we ended up using our head lamps instead.
