does anyone know of a good range finder with night vision. wanting to do anchor watch at night, figuring I could tell if I'm dragging anchor.
Any help would be cool. thanks.

Go look over on Snipershide at the night vision devices subforum. The only handheld versions I've seen is guys mounting something like a Radius or Raptar to a handheld thermal or NV monocular. With thermal they co-witness the laser to the reticle and with the NV you can see the laser through the monocular. Most I've seen are all weapon mounted though: rifle mounted rangefinder and clip-on NV or thermal.

??? ever heard about AIS, radars, ecdis? Unless you didn't tell the real use for it, I seriouly think you are after the wrong piece of equipment

You dont use AIS for anchor watch....do you know what AIS is for....on coming vessels....but thanks.

You can set anchor alarms on gps, and proximity alarms on most radars.
Yes, yes I know...but comes a time when anchors need to be hoisted in the dark and reset because the anchor alarm goes off. hard to tell exactly the distance to shore for letting out the appropriate amount of chain/rode. Several buddies of mine have had to reset during heavy winds in total darkness . Time is important, so a quick look out the wheelhouse window to gauge your distance is in my mind worth the effort of finding a night vision aid that tells me exactly where I am.
