Hello I am looking into getting a new scope and am looking for some advice is the Nightforce really worth the extra money over the Vortex and if I could find a used one it would not really be that much more then the Vortex so am I better off spending more for a used Nightforce or less for a new Vortex? I will be using the gun for long range target and will will also see sometime hunting.

Seriously comparing a Nightforce to a Vortex is not a fair comparison to the Vortex. If you are using either of these scopes on a hunting rig, you realize you are carrying some significant weight on top of your rifle? If you are planning on making some seriously long shots on game, of course the ethics come into play (ie. can you repeatedly make cold bore, long range shots to ethically kill game cleanly?). Also, even at 300m, a deer at 9x is plenty large enough in the field of view.

Given that you have no history on this forum, I am not sure what your experience is or how you like to hunt. If you had a bit more info on your original post, you may get more valuable feedback. Things to consider: model of rifle and caliber you are shooting, intended game, past experience, weight restrictions on your gear.

I am considering changing scopes to something a bit more target friendly as well as useful for hunting. One to consider is the new Bushnell series 6500. 30mm tubes, and with the middle range of magnification, it really is a do-it-all scope for under $1000

Yes I am new to this forum and the sport this was my first year hunting and I do not plane on making any long shots on game but would like to get into the long range target shooting I only plan on taking the gun hunting a couple week of the year so I will live with the extra weight but I would rather buy one scope and be happy with it for many years then buy one and want another in the next year.

you need to look through them and see what fits your need better, optics can be very subjective. for what I do, my vortex is perfect. i have one mounted on my 300 wm savage that it use for hunting and target I'm shooting out to 800m so far with good results.

If you plan on LR target shooting NF is seriously better than the Viper. If $ is an issue consider Sightron Siii ( I recommend the 8-32x56 with LRMOA reticle )

My Nightforce is one of the few firearm related items I ever regretted selling.

So to make up for it, we just became an official Nightforce dealer :D
