Hi guys,

I'm looking at used optics, and I was wondering how the zerostop on a nightforce NXS is supposed to work... On one that I'm looking at, it stops clicking about one MOA before it stops turning. There's definitely a hard stop after that, but it just seems like it's sliding for that last turn. Is that normal? Or is that a sign that the gears have seen better days?

Everything else about the scope looks great, and I'm *probably* just being paranoid... Just looking for someone to confirm!

Thanks guys!

Nope, not normal at all. Should be "consistent clicks" right to the zero stop.

AS the poster above stated, something is wrong. It should be tactile clicks all the way to the mechanical hard stop.

If you change your zero stop position lets say up one full revolution on the dial, does it still slip a full 1MOA before coming to a hard stop?

Alright, thanks - I'm glad I asked! Is this something anyone has experienced before? Easily fixable? I didn't tinker with it at all - could this just be an under tightened dust cover? I didn't have an Allen key when I was looking at it...

Oh! Good timing!

There didn't seem to be any slipping changing directions - only at the extreme end. It would slip for one MOA going down to the bottom, then for one MOA coming back up. Other than that, clicks feel solid.

Didn't have a chance to change the zero, though... Sounds like I should give it a try.

Does it slip indefinitely or does the slipping eventually stop before hitting a hard stop?

You will need a 5/64” allen wrench.

1)I would remove the turret cap first (see if you get a feeling the allen bolts are loose)
2)Then inspect the 4 zerostop screws set in the turret mechanism located under the turret cap. They only need to be finger tight (4in/lbs)----DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN!! (inspect and make sure none are stripped)
3)Inspect the outside circumference of the turret body to see if the turret cap screws have been slipping- this would leave circular scratches around the outside.

4) Re assemble insuring all bolts are snug- not death grip tight!

The slipping definitely stops after 1 MOA, and when I go up from zero, it slips 1 MOA back in the other direction before starting to click again.

I'll see if I can grab a 5/64" allen and give that a try soon - I feel like #3 on your list is the culprit, but I'd really like to confirm!

Thanks for all the suggestions guys!

It sounds like the turret itself may have an issue and not the actual gear. I have about 3 zero stop scopes (2x leupys and 1x S&B) and they all have the stop built into the turret and not the actual scope body. You may want to see if you can borrow another turret and try it but it may be hard to do if you are buying this but I am pretty sure Nightforce's warranty should easily take care of this.
