Nightime Predator Hunting

Predator hunting at night would be fun alright. But with shotguns only. I don't want anyone shooting at something on the ground in my township with a rifle.
I've coon hunted lots with hounds at night but it did make me wonder sometimes about shooting a rifle into he air. I have heard in the maritimes they can only use .410 shot guns at night for raccoons. Maybe the back east gunnutters could comment on that.

that would be awsome to hunt yotes and fox at night. I am considering buying a night licence for coon as i have never done it before. Think a blue tic would make a good coon dog? PM me if any one is interested in blue tic pups as well. They might catch up to the coon and tear it apart before it even gets to the tree :D

There are lots of great Blue Tick coonhounds- only surpassed in numbers by Walkers and English coonhounds. However, it takes a helluva lot more than just buying a BT pup and taking it into the bush or cornfield at night. There are hundreds of hours of training to make a finished coon hound- and that's if the pup itself has all the tools to do the job.

As far as catching coons on the ground, that happens rarely. Coons don't tend to stick around when they hear hounds tongueing. Very young coons do get caught . That said, 2 of my buddy's Plott bear hounds pulled a big boar coon out of a rock crevice the season before last. It was a very short ordeal, but not every hound has the gumption to tackle a healthy coon. And it shouldn't be encouraged.

absolutely i thought about trapping one this winter and using it for scent to teach a pup. I'm sure there are many methods but I will worry about that after i actually pick which pup i want.

as for the catching on the ground part, i was... kinda... half joking lol but like you said it is possible in rare circumstances.

as some have mentioned predator control vs hunting?

I am not advocating hunting at night and having a lame excuse I mean legimate(although I know some farm guys that really push the limit on that but thats another topic). Most of the regs being quoted are hunting regs. In ontario at least, predator control trumps hunting regs to the best of my knowledge . If a coyotye or dog for that matter is bothering my cattle the difference is daylight 220 swift dark 12 gauge. raccoon in barn same deal(well 22 to save the roof). Has anyone got writing to that effect. thats how I grew up and every other farmer I know but I've never had a co come to my farm to see what I am up to either.....
