Nightvision damaged by excessive light?

I was just at London Drugs today looking at a Bushnell 5x42 Stealthview and the person at the counter told me that I couldn't try it out because the lighting in the store would damge the nightvision. Is this true?

Would it be harmful to the optics to use nightvision in anything other than low light conditions?
 
First gen nightvision like starlight scopes could be damaged by excessive light - but current gen should have electronic safety devices installed to prevent overloads.

Just check the user manual it should say.
