Guys - been looking at getting a decent spotter for a long time now. I have good glass on all my rifles (Elcan, Nightforce, etc.) so think it's time to get a good spotter to take to the range and for general observation.

I have found a LNIB Nikon ED82 locally for $1250... I know this scope is currently priced at about $1900USD, so seems like a good deal, but all the reviews I can find relate to birding, not shooting. Or would I be better off spending the money on a Vortex Viper HD (ugh) or Pentax E80?

Any shooters on here have experience with Nikon ED series spotters? Any comments would be appreciated!

I don't think you can go wrong with an Nikon ED82. It has been discontinued and replaced with models that are at least twice the price of that.

Heard great things about Pentax as well but they're hard to find.

Thanks - yah I think it's a good deal. Got him down to $1200. Nearest scope in that $$ range new from a store is significantly 'less' scope for the money.

Anyone else have any ideas about a $1000 range spotter?

I know the Aussie's use the 82mm ED fieldscope among others. Reviews on it were good when I was shopping for a spotter.

I got my Pentax from binocularscanada.com They had to bring it in, but from ordering to my doorstep was under 2 weeks. Pretty damn fine price too I might add. On par with those selling in the US. Mind you that was early 2015.

Thanks,
Cal.

I just checked their site, and they still have it listed for the same price I paid. $882 for the angled version.

Thanks,
Cal.

Well i bought the scope - MINT condition and works fantastic. Can't wait to hit the range... very happy with the purchase.

Now to find some eyepieces somewhere... they are tough to find... and pricey! Too bad this scope doesn't use more common eyepiece sizes...

binocularscanada.com also had eyepieces when I was looking around too. I'm on the fence between the ed82, and the Pentax pf80ed as well. I think Pentax has better eyepieces, and Nikon has the better scope, too bad they didn't use the same eyepieces.
