Going on a 308 deer/elk rifle. Right now the P5 4-16x42 and Viper 4-12x40 are both on sale for $400 @ Cabelas. My first thought was get the P5 for better eye relief, with higher magnification a bonus. But then if MSRP means anything the Viper is regular price $100 more expensive, so a better deal, and I have no complaints about the Viper on my T1X. Which would you go for?

Cabela's regular price on the Viper is over inflated. It's $399 regular price at Prophet River. Tricks like that are why I don't give Cabela's my money.

I've got a couple Nikon Prostaff scopes but not the exact model you are looking at. They are excellent scopes. I've also got 3 of the Viper 4-12x40 scopes and really like them. My favorite feature is the large lever on the magnification adjustment ring. Makes adjustment changes really nice especially if wearing gloves. Also the Viper going to 12x instead of the Prostaff's 16x isn't going to be a negative on a hunting scope. I find I hardly ever even go up to 12x on the Viper while taking a shot. The only time I find extra magnification useful is when sighting in and accuracy testing.

That being said, you won't go wrong with either of the scopes you are looking at.

And I should add that Nikon is out of the scope business now so if there's ever a problem you won't be getting it fixed or replaced. Word is they are planning on offering a $$ credit towards another type of Nikon product like binos or something else.

That being said I haven't had a problem with any Nikon scope and I just bought another a couple days ago. They make (made) good scopes so I'll take my chances.
