Looking for a new scope for my 30-06 rifle. it's currently sitting on a old Tasco (made in china) with see-thru mounts. I don't really have any problems shooting with this scope, but it does fog a lot.

Now the 2 scopes I'm looking at are the Nikon Prostaff II and the Vortex Diamondback. (either 2X7 or 3X9). I'm using this rifle for deer and moose, shot are no longer then 250 yards.

I've been looking all over the net for reviews and both seem to be very close. Both are about the same price +/- 20$. Current budget is about 250$ for the scope and I'm also looking at changing my mounting systems. My rifle is a BSA CF2 and it's compatible with Remington 700 bases, so lots of options available. I just don't know yet if I want permanent bases/ring or something detachable in order to use the iron sight if something happen to the rifle/scope.

Experience? Recommendation? Suggestion for something different?

Thanks,

Either one is good for the purpose, I use Vortex and like them. I'd suggest trying to do a side by side comparison and see which one is better for your eye. You may find you like the eye relief of one better than the other or one may seem sharper than the other for you. If they still both compare favourably in a side by side, go with the one you like the look of :)

Had the chance to see a Vortex Diamondback 2X7 with the BDC reticle (for 229$) and I have to say Vortex does have good glass. I didn't have the chance to see a Nikon Prostaff yet, but that's coming up in a few days. Found what seem to be a very good deal on a Prostaff 2X7 with the Nikoplex reticle for 147$. I think I'll go with some quick detach rings for the new set-up, just to have the option to use the iron sight...should I go Leupold or Warne?

I don't know about you, but I had see-through mounts once on a rifle and never used them in about 12 years of hunting with the gun.

No experience with the leupolds but i'm pleased with the Warne's They are a bit heavy though. Another scope i would consider is a Bushnell elite 3-9x40. I have one on one of my 30-06 rifles. Had it out to the range today actually. I would also ditch the see thru's.

I just bought a new Vortex Diamondback HO series, basically an updated Viper with the Diamondback name. Paid $450 for a 3-12x42 and Im very happy with the scope, just as clear as my Zeiss Conquest 3.5-10x44 and came with a sunshade and side focus. Great mid-class glass and Vortex has great warranty.

Well the see thru mounts are gone. Got my rifle back this afternoon from l'Archerot "The Ultimate Huntingstore (site sponsor) with a Vortex Diamondback 3-9X40 DH BDC. Can't wait to hit the range.

The Vortex Diamondback 3-9x40 DH BDC scope is very good value for the money, also the scope has very good field of few compared to other 3-9 scopes. I have one mounted on my Ruger American Compact all weather in 223, since the length of the scope is also less than comparable 3-9 scopes. I think the Diamondback scopes are very good optically, the only CON for these scopes is the eye relief which is a little shorter than some comparable scopes.
