Nm 91/30

Just received my first ever MN 91/30. It is a refurb. I have a question ref the finish on the rifle. It appears to have been painted with a cheap black paint that is flaking and looks real crappy. Any experience as to what I can do about removing the paint myself ... does it have to be refinished to keep from rusting ... any info appreciated.

Is the black paint on the metal? If so, much depends on what bluing remains underneath.

Post pictures before doing anything as it <may> be the original or genuine refurb finish.

Pics would tell but its pretty common with refurb russian rifle, be SVT SKS or mosin nagant. Where the bluing was worn out, they applied black paint to protect the metal instead of doing a full reblue. I would let the paint on.

decision made for me. Started wiping off the cosmolene gunk with a paper towel and the paint just started coming off in chunks. It isn't even paint, more like the boot black we used to put on combat boots, sort of a plasticy crap. I'll clean it all off and see what I am left with.

Sounds like the stuff they used in some of refurbs.
