I'm thinking of cutting down my Springfield NM to a SOCOM length. Would this be sacriligious? Would it ruin it's accuracy? Or should I just sell it and buy a shorty?

I can provide a socom barrel, plus the install, and possibly would have a use for your NM barrel
Email me if interested, but please don't chop yer barrel ;)

I dunno, I like the idea, not to SOCOM length so as to make it restricted but 18.5" to make it compact and still legal to hunt with. Short action cartridges don't lose much velocity when barrells are shortened a bit and shorter barrells tend to be more accurate not less.

I'd probably just buy a norico for that though and have 2 guns, but hey considering how many guys on here are building Tac guns to NM standards, why not.

Come up with a plan your happy with and let us know. It's all about the fun in the end.

You'd be making a restricted rifle that you won't get an ATT to take shooting. If you want to play with making a marketing inspired rifle to look at and fondle at home, buy an M305. You really don't want to muck around with a $3500 rifle.
"...Short action cartridges don't lose much velocity..." 50ish to 100 fps velocity loss per inch. Depending on which study you believe. The gas system requires alteration too.

.... And then yer #### WILL fall off! Seriously, cut down a Norc, Keep the M1A the way it is! Such a shame to buy an NM only to cut it down and make it a shorty! :D

truthfully I'd have to side with hungry and sunray on this one. buy a 429.00 marstar m14s or cruise the ee for one ..... get it done the way you want..... and if you really don't fancy the springer NM , sell it to fund the rifle you want and to pay for some ammo for said rifle ;)
