I was thinking about restoring an SMLE sporter but the wood is proving difficult to locate. The only place I could find some was on Liberty Tree and they missing the front handguard.

Where could a guy find some original wood other than trying my luck at gun shows? I'm aware of the new set from a former site sponsor but I'm not willing to shell out what they're asking.

Cheers

If not LibertyTree collectors, then Numrich but they are sold out of the front handguard and do not have the forestock listed. But Libertytree does (it has the screw).
Lots of parts on eBay, You'll have to shop around. Locate some gun shows too.

I'm not being facetious but it would be less frustrating to sell your sporter and buy a complete un-sporterized No1 MkIII*. You'll probably get around $150.00 for your sporter. A complete wood set would set you back $300- $400 and miscellaneous parts could easily add another $100.00 or so. Decent No1's go for around $800-$850.00. Just saying.....

rifledude got it right ,those new repro stocks are anything but a drop in fit and you had better know what your doing and have lots of patiance to properly fit a no1mk111 into one of these stock sets.If you put a dollar figure on your time it will be a very low per hour rate ,it as to be a labour of love.Buy one thats ready to shoot would be my 2 cents worth as well.

That's definitely being considered at this point. I more just wanted the project but at the same time not spend more than what a complete rifle goes for. Might be pipe dream but at $150-$200 for the sporter, I'll gamble.

Look for a milspec LE but hang onto your sporter! That gets you started on a LE collection.

As mentioned, it'll certainly be cheaper and quicker to buy a full wood SMLE than restoring. But, as a labour of love and a damn fine project, restoring a milsurp to OEM condition is a noble task.

I have two wood sets for the SMLE's and a lot of fitting is required.
If you have a sporter with VG metal it could be an interesting project.
If you could spend 15 minutes a day, enough time to stay interesting and not long enough to be frustrating, after six months you could have a very nice classic rifle that you would be proud to show off.

I also have a stock set for the No 5, jungle carbine. The butt stock holes were undersized and misaligned and misaligned to the receiver. It took about four hours total to get it fitted to the receiver socket. In the end, the buttstock was offside to the receiver. The butt was very beefy in all dimensions, so it will have to be trimmed all over. I'm going to borrow an original so I can get the dimensions right. The foreend went in place with just two taps of a rubber mallet and the handguard fits, but touches the barrel a bit. No heavy fitting required for the front end, but again the outside dimensions are beefy and need to be trimmed.

Since I have about a dozen unfinished projects on the go, it would be a few years before I look at the SMLE's.

Does anyone know where this company Located....saids there are in Canada...but does a very good job at not putting any locate on there web page...
I would be interested in buying some products from them , but never like the idea , of not knowing where it is coming from....made in Canada, that’s great! Reboxed in Canada...?

I sent them an email three or four days ago, regarding the kind of wood (walnut, maple, etc.) that they could use for their prestigious gunstocks. Hopefully, they will answer it.

Have you had any luck , on a return email yet...just bumping, so I don’t loss, the info...

Someone at the Ancaster gun shows usually brings a bunch of new made stocks. If anyone knows who that is maybe try him? A father and son who make them I believe.
