No. 1 Mk. III - Brass Barrel Bands?

I recently saw an Aussie manufactured Brass Barrel band for a No. 1 Mk. III. It's kind of a strange thing to see. Anyone know why/when they were used?

i can tell you its an aussie only thing. i had a target model aussie 1/3 that had a brass band.

WW2 made in Australia. Inner band will also be found made of brass.

Yes WW2 Aussie expedient, faster to cast brass than machine steel, these would have been painted black at the factory I was once told.

Just got this one (and there's another heading my way) for a project rebuild No1.
This one was painted black and has the OA stamp .They're hinged just like the steel bands.
Steel No1 BSA ...Brass No1 OA....Steel No4 LB

Certainly dresses up the ol' Ishy .
