I have a Ruger no 1B 223 and I am having a problem with the scope. The scope is a Bushnell 4200 4-16. So far I am unable to get my face close enough to see the whole field of view unless I have crawled up the stock. I have read on several sites in the US that this is common with this rifle. Have shortened the stock 1/2in and got setback mounts too. Is this the wrong scope for this rifle-eye relief too short? Have not tried another scope but I plan to go into the dealer and sight a few to see what the differences are in that area. Seems my VXIII 2.5-8 is much better but I dont want to take the scope off of my 30-06 in hunting season. Your thoughts please come one come all. Muchas grass.

There is a ton of mis-information going around about eye-relief and certain manufacturers, if you have the scope set back as far as it will go and you still don't have a full field of view - new scope, do yourself a favor though and take no-ones word on eye relief, get a measurement of what length you need and go try out different scopes, then mount your new VXII or VXIII and have fun!

I have recently realised that this is correct. I will have to take the gun into a shop here and play with a few scopes. I have a VXIII, Bushnell 4200 and a Nikon Prostaff 4x and the Nikon is the nicest optics of all and has a generous eye relief. I have some work to do for sure.

If there is no way to get the scope closer to your eye you might consider a custom quarter rib to bring the mounting points farther back. My #1 had the opposite problem - I wanted the glass farther away, and a custom quarter rib worked perfectly for me, resulting in nothing obstructing the loading port, and no way to be hit in recoil regardless of the position being shot from.

This is a typical problem with many people and the number 1's.
You may try offset rings, but the easiest fix would be to put on a scope with more eye relif.
The leupold, Zeiss, Nikon, and Valdada scopes all have lots of eye relif.
I have had all these scopes on different number 1's in the past.

I put a straight 6 power Leupold on my #1 and the eye relief problem was solved. While I have several Bushnell Elite scopes and like them very much they do not have enough eye relief when mounted on the #1 with regular rings.
